Artist Statement

The principles of true art is not to portray, but to evoke

— Jerzy Kosinski

It all started with a third grade class art project. A historical mural on a roll of brown paper taped to a wall.

Having only arrived in the US, a short couple of years prior as a young refugee, I was still not comfortable with my language skills and new environment. I was an introvert. Then there was art. I remember the feeling of creating something unique. All mine. It’s more than that for me. It’s about the process of getting there, the “rush” when art happens.

My paintings have always evolved from impressions of life, rather than a strict rendering of a given subject. In every new painting, I relish the ebb and flow of the lines and colors. The power of less is more and the ways simplicity and boldness together can magically evoke a sensation.

I paint in water based paints - turns out I’m allergic to turpentine. Watercolor has always been my first love. It is as direct of a medium as can be. There can't be any hesitancy. Once placed, a brushstroke of color will then do its magic. It is this uniqueness and spontaneity of the medium where “happy accidents” happen for me. I often paint with Acrylic paint as well and find it a more forgiving medium. “Unhappy accidents” are fixable.
